How does fall detection work?

As we know, within our caseloads, falls can occur. Anything from seizures to fainting are common reasons why someone may fall. AMA PERS can help with our Fall Detection Capability! All AMA PERS devices can be equipped with sensors that can detect when a fall occurs. This is a great alternative in the event a member is at HIGH RISK.
Fall detection is a technology that can be a great add-on to your member’s PERS service. I usually refer to fall detection as an “extra safety net”. However, we always advise and educate members to, when in doubt, press their button. Members should not solely rely on fall detection but look at it as a “just in case” safety measure.

How Does It Work?

If the system detects a fall or a fall-like event, it triggers an alert. • Accelerometers: These sensors measure changes in acceleration and can detect sudden, rapid movements associated with falls.
• Gyroscopes: Gyroscopes measure changes in orientation and can help determine the direction of a fall.
• Pressure sensors: Floor-based pressure sensors can detect changes in pressure when someone falls or collapses.
• Infrared motion detectors: These can be used to detect movement or lack of movement in a specific area, such as a room.
• Data Processing: The data from these sensors are continuously monitored and processed by a computer or a dedicated device. Algorithms are used to analyze the sensor data and identify patterns associated with a fall event.

Sophisticated algorithms are employed to distinguish between normal movements and a fall. These algorithms consider factors like the speed and force of the fall, the angle at which it occurs, and the lack of subsequent movement.

What are the draw backs or complaints with fall detection?

While fall detection technology has improved significantly and can be highly beneficial in many situations, there are some drawbacks and common complaints associated with these systems:
